Industry talks about accessibility

In May Passenger Focus attended the quarterly meeting of the Department for Transport’s Industry Steering Group to discuss rail accessibility improvements. 

The steering group includes representatives from the Department for Transport, Transport Scotland, Network Rail and the Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee. Since the start of the Access for All initiative, 104 stations have been provided with step-free access by installing lifts and ramps. Another 51 station schemes should be completed in 2013. 

Access for All cannot be delivered at all stations and at many the stepping distance between train and platform is awkward, if not impossible, for some passengers. From June access humps, to raise the platform level where train doors open, will be installed to improve access at around 80 stations in England and Wales.
