What is happening now?

The current Chiltern franchise, operated by Arriva UK Trains, is due to expire in December 2021 when a new franchise will start.

The timetable for the award of the next franchise will begin when the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) Notice is published in May 2020. This will be followed by consultation, invitations to prospective bidders to complete a pre-qualification questionnaire, leading to a list of shortlisted bidders, before the Invitation to Tender (ITT) is issued in October 2020. The new franchise will be awarded in August 2021 ready to start in December.

The twice-yearly National Rail Passenger Survey gives an overview of how passengers find Chiltern services.
