Road User Voice May 2016: Online map tool developed to help survey road users

Transport Focus is developing an online map tool which will play a crucial role in ensuring we only gather user feedback about their experiences of using motorways and major ‘A’ roads managed by Highways England.

We’re working with Beacon Dodsworth, mapping travel and research consultants, to develop the tool as part of our new Strategic Roads User Survey (SRUS). This is an important part of the development of the new road user survey which will enable it to provide detailed feedback from road users on specific parts of the Strategic Road Network (SRN).

The online map tool will show respondents a map with the relevant roads highlighted to help respondents recall their most recent journey. They will be asked to use the map to show where their journey started and finished and the software will suggest a likely route. Respondents will then be able to amend their route if required, before resuming the questionnaire and rating their satisfaction with various aspects of their journey on these roads.

Transport Focus has developed this approach to the research in response to the findings of its Maps and Apps user research. This research looked at the issues users faced using paper maps for the existing National Road User Satisfaction Survey (NRUSS) and found journey recall was most accurate when using an online, interactive map. The new SRUS and the map tool will be piloted with road users this summer.
