Road User Voice May 2016: Delving into the world of road haulage
Transport Focus went to find out more about and see road haulage in action at a huge warehouse facility in Merseyside.
Hauliers are important users of the Strategic Road Network – most of the things we consume or use in our daily lives have to be hauled by road. Understanding what hauliers have to say about England’s major roads matters. This visit, in early April, to a haulier’s regional distribution centre close to the M6 contains both chilled and frozen areas to store a vast array of food and goods.
Transport Focus met the distribution manager to learn about the needs of the company in regards to Highways England’s network. It was especially useful to understand the complexities in planning hundreds of time-sensitive deliveries across the country to both customers and suppliers alike. Unsurprisingly, journey time reliability was cited as a top priority.
The opportunity to speak to HGV drivers also provided real insight into the challenges and issues they face. Ruts and potholes in the carriageway were mentioned several times as key areas where improvements could be made. This ties in with our HGV drivers’ priorities and experiences research where the number one priority by drivers were improved quality of road surface.
