Transport User Voice February 2026 – Chief Executive’s editorial

Variety is important in your work isn’t it?

Sometimes our job is about raising the profile of issues that are important to people but aren’t getting the attention they deserve. Other times it’s about keeping the pressure on to resolve and improve services people are already talking about.

This month we’ve got a bit of both in Transport User Voice. Our rail passenger scorecard helps keep the industry focused on what matters most to passengers so we can independently track progress and call out where things are moving too slowly, as well as placing a spotlight on progress. There will be times when this will be welcomed by the industry as independent validation of what they are doing. I suspect there will also be times when it will make uncomfortable reading. We’ll keep publishing the results regardless and will work collaboratively to keep the responses as constructive as possible. We want this to be a vehicle for change.

Our work on lorry drivers is different. The issues are well understood by those affected by them and we have plenty of evidence about what the problem is. The challenge is that lorry driver rest stops are a key bit of national infrastructure that aren’t owned or managed like other infrastructure sites. If drivers can’t make the deliveries that we rely on then we’ll quickly find, as we almost did during the pandemic, that there is a big problem. Lots of different organisations in the public and private sector have a role to play, but nobody has responsibility for taking the lead overall.

Getting the issue up the national media and political agenda is therefore important, so I’m pleased the Transport Select Committee will be holding an oral evidence session on HGV. and coach driver facilities next Wednesday at 9:15am which I’ll be participating in.

We’ll be promoting it on LinkedIn, along with other organisations attending, and it will also be live-streamed on Parliament TV. Please take an interest and do what you can to lend support.

Enjoy the read.
