Rail fares announcement – Passenger Focus response (December 2013)

05 December 2013

Today the Government announced that regulated rail fares will now increase in line with inflation rather than RPI + 1 per cent as planned.

David Sidebottom, passenger director of the independent watchdog Passenger Focus, said:

“This brings an end to a decade of inflation-busting fare rises and will be welcome news to passengers in England, especially those who rely on the train for work. It is something we have been pushing for, for several years now, and we are pleased that the Government has recognised the need to act to relieve the burden on hard-pressed passengers.”

Background

• Our most recent passenger survey showed that less than a third of commuters (29 per cent) felt that their ticket was value for money.
