26 August rail strike: pre-strike intentions and information survey

24 August 2023

We spoke to a representative sample people across Britain to find out how the upcoming rail strikes would affect their travel plans  on 26 August.

The survey details awareness levels, ratings of information provided about which train services would run and ratings of information about ticket changes/refunds.

  • Almost two thirds of people who intended to travel on 26 August were aware of the strikes.
  • The majority of those that had planned to travel on days affected by strike action say they will no longer do so, but one in five still plan to use the train on 26 August.
  • Information ratings have decreased compared to previous survey waves. Just over four in ten of those who had intended to travel between 26 or 27 August rated information about which train services were running as good.
  • We also asked about awareness of the upcoming ASLEF strike on 1 September and a further RMT strike on 2 September. Fewer people are currently aware of this strike and the potential for disruption the following day.
