Watchdog comment on £3bn bus funding boost

05 December 2025

Millions of passengers across the UK are set to benefit from faster, cheaper and more reliable buses after the Government announces a £3 billion boost for services and infrastructure.

Multi-year funding will give councils the freedom to spend their allocations in whatever way they see fit, whether it is lowering the prices of fares, introducing new routes and zero-emission buses, or creating safer bus stops.

Louise Collins, Director at the independent watchdog Transport Focus said:

“This significant investment is a positive step towards delivering the reliable, affordable, and frequent services passengers tell us they want and need.

“Bus services are a key part of how communities all over the UK travel to school, work, doctor’s appointments and to visit family and friends – and sometimes are the only means of public transport in the area. Done right they can offer affordable and accessible ways to travel. We’ll be using our national Your Bus Journey survey to help local authorities deliver in a way that works for passengers.”
