The Little White Bus – the Big Society in action?

21 November 2014

Much debate at the moment about how to ensure rural areas have some transport provision as local authority cuts bite on tendered services. I tried to summarise some of the issues in a recent article for Transport Times: read here

It is good therefore to see a great initiative in Yorkshire. The Little White Bus, a not-for-profit, community-run bus service has been set up to operate out of the Upper Wensleydale Community Office in Hawes. Impressed by its success, the county council awarded Little White Bus contracts to serve two more routes.  With four buses and 27 drivers – most of whom are volunteers – it is on course to transport more than 20,000 passengers a year on routes between Garsdale Station and Gayle, Keld and Reeth, and Askrigg and Leyburn.
