Marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway
13 March 2025
2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway.
On 27 September 1825, George Stephenson’s Locomotion No.1 hauled the world’s first steam-powered passenger train along the Stockton and Darlington railway; a distance of 26 miles. This historic event, celebrated with great fanfare, is generally regarded as the start of the modern railway.
Transport Focus’ heritage dates back to the Transport Act of 1947, 122 years after the advent of the railway, when the Central Transport Consultative Committee was established. While we have changed a lot over the years, one thing has stayed the same – putting the voice of passengers at the heart of what we do.
The railway’s bicentennial anniversary is particularly special as it occurs in a year of increased significance for the industry as it undergoes significant reform. Not only are we looking back at the history of one of the most transformative feats of human engineering, but also looking ahead at how we can drive positive change for passengers now and in the future.
While the railway has wielded a prevalent impact on communities all over the country and continues to transform local cities and economies, we need to look ahead with optimism to meet the demands of today and pave the way for the next century.
The Government’s consultation on the next phase of the journey towards Rail Reform is a significant step towards redesigning the railway around the needs of everyone who uses it, but the challenge will be getting it right, so it delivers this consistently in the long-term.
Using passenger and engagement tools like the Great British Railways Customer Community, Transport Focus continues to push for a public transport system and a strategic road network that works for everyone.
The 200-year anniversary of the railway is something we should rightly be proud of, but it is important to remember that its passengers have played a key part in its success.
We have been a consistent voice for the passenger for almost 80 years and remain committed to ensuring that the needs and voices of users are heard.
