A bridge too far? Controversial plans for York

05 August 2013

The council in York has made a brave decision. For a six-month trial period from 27 August the Lendal Bridge in the city will be closed to cars and motorbikes from 10.30am to 5pm. There are only two bridges to cross the city’s main river, the Ouse.

First, which operates many of the buses in the city, is putting in place new family fares, more buses and better information to get more passengers to take advantage of this development.

The reactions in the city are predictable: fears of gridlock, loss of trade matched against cutting congestion and speeding up bus services and making them more attractive. We will be able to gauge bus passengers’ reactions. In November Passenger Focus and York City Council are funding survey work as part of our Bus Passenger Survey.

Other councils will be watching the results very closely.
