Advertising works?

There is an old adage that: “Half of advertising is effective, but it is not clear which half,” which is probably still true. However, it is really good to see that parts of the rail industry are feeling self confident enough to place really good ads.
I have noticed ads recently from SouthWest Trains and East Coast, but the best one was a Virgin ad I cycled past recently – is this a first? Good bold ads like the one below really do catch the eye.
