Driving the Manchester ‘box’

24 November 2015

There’s no one better to guide you around the Strategic Road Network (SRN) than a Highways England traffic officer – they have seen it all.

Spent a very useful couple of hours on a Friday afternoon with Mark Pugh operating out of Rob Lane depot just off the M6 near Newton-le-Willows. Drove on the M6 and M62, then the western section of the M60 Manchester Outer Ring Road past the Trafford Centre.

As you can see from the picture below, we saw the Barton Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal and the pillars of the new bridge that will be next to the current one giving access to the new developments around there.

Very busy as traffic built up on a Friday – conversion to Smart motorways may help in future but capacity is going to continue to be an issue.
