Getting to Europe

14 September 2010

Taking a two hour flight across Europe makes you think – why don’t we take the train?

I might do next time, but with young children the cost and convenience factors still push you into the air. The great opportunity for affordable cross-Europe rail travel could well be missed by the railways.

Europe’s integration has been fueled by low cost airlines and coaches while the railways remain for the relatively rich. It’s a shame as mass rail transit across Europe makes a lot of sense. Will Britain’s high speed rail link to the continent join up with the new high speed line to the North? It will be interesting to see what happens.
