Hop on the Number 10: Norfolk Green shines

05 September 2013

I spent the Bank Holiday weekend in glorious north west Norfolk. The family went on train to King’s Lynn and then the bus to Hunstanton. Plus Bus tickets – which you add on to your train ticket – are really good value and you even get a discount with the Family and Friends railcard.

Norfolk Green is good. Excellent information on website – clear and fresh. Real-time information (Norfolk County Council in action) at many stops. A clean, modern bus with friendly driver rolled up bang on time to meet the train. He dealt with a passenger on the wrong bus really well – apologised for the wrong information he had given out, told lady exactly what to do and how to make sure her ticket would be accepted on the Number 11. Just how to do it – rescued situation and made everyone feel very assured.

The highlight was the ducks crossing the road which held things up a bit. Bit disconcerting when driver bangs on the side of the bus and you can’t see why. Bus services like these deserve to succeed.

All in stark contrast to rail journey. Noisy, hot, no refreshments, really worn-out toilets, no sign of any staff and, even with a railcard it was about £80 return for the four of us – pricey although the off-peak ticket does allow you to choose the train. Investment and attention now long overdue.
