Responding to the government announcement that all new smart motorways have been cancelled, Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith, said:
“Many road users will be reassured by the decision that no new smart motorways are to be built.
“We know from our research that road users are concerned about not having a hard shoulder on motorways, particularly when thinking about what would happen if they broke down.
“With existing smart motorways set to stay in use, we’ll be pressing National Highways to complete the extra emergency laybys as quickly as possible and to continue improving the performance of its stopped vehicle detection system.”
