Highways England’s evaluation of the first smart motorway – Transport Focus response

22 March 2017

Responding to Highways England’s evaluation of the first smart motorway all lane running scheme Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith, said:

“These upgrades appear to be achieving their objective of keeping vehicles moving on the M25 without having to widen the road.

“While it is still early days, safety does not appear to be compromised, but further work is needed to improve red X compliance and keep stopping areas for emergencies only.

“What’s missing here is an understanding of road users’ views about all lane running. That’s why Transport Focus is researching drivers’ experiences of Smart motorways and whether they feel safe.”
