Heatwave travel disruption

18 July 2022

Transport users face significant travel disruption due record-breaking temperatures forecast this week.

Transport Focus is monitoring the impact of any disruption as transport operators advise people not to travel.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme weather in parts of England on Monday and Tuesday with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 40°C in some areas.

Transport Focus chief executive, Anthony Smith, said:

“For people unable to avoid travelling during this heatwave, it is crucial that information is clear. If trains will have to run much more slowly than usual or roads have to be shut, people need to understand that so, if necessary, they can change their plans.

“We welcome the Government announcement that rail season ticket holders who choose not to travel on Monday and Tuesday can claim compensation.

“Looking ahead, sustained investment must continue to ensure our railways and roads are sufficiently resilient to keep people moving despite increasing extremes in our weather.”

Transport Focus is working with transport operators to ensure information is accurate and passengers are aware of refund and compensation entitlement. Details can be found on National Rail Enquiries.
