Maria Eagle MP, shadow transport secretary’s speech to Labour Party annual conference 2013 – Passenger Focus response

24 September 2013

Anthony Smith, Passenger Focus chief executive, said:

“We welcome the shadow minister’s call for an increased focus on fares, especially ending the flexibility in the fare basket when it comes to average increases. We have long said that ticketing is too complicated, and that terms and times of travel should be made clearer on tickets – our research shows many are confused by ticket vending machines and are unsure if they have the right ticket for their journey.

“Passengers need to be able to feel confident that they are not being ripped off, or that a mistake could cost them over the odds. Anything that opens up the system and reduces complexity will help move towards this goal.”
