Rail fares reform – watchdog comments

07 February 2023

Rail fares reform took a step forward today with the announcement of a further trial of single-leg pricing.

Anthony Smith, chief executive of the independent watchdog, said:

“People thinking about making a rail journey will be pleased to hear that the process of working out what ticket to buy should become simpler – and hopefully cheaper. We know that value for money is a key priority for passengers, especially as the cost of living continues to climb.

“Transport Focus has long called for a simpler, more transparent fares structure including single-leg pricing. It cuts out the confusion of the 10p or £1 difference between some singles and returns, and also enables passengers to pay only for the level of flexibility they need.

“It’s right to trial other new ideas such as demand-led pricing – but we’ll be closely watching to check that the trial does deliver better value for money for passengers.”
