Rail strikes cancelled – watchdog response

04 November 2022

Today the RMT announced that it had called off the strikes planned for next week.

David Sidebottom, director of the independent watchdog Transport Focus, said:

“Passengers will be relieved to hear this week’s strikes have been called off. This is a positive step towards a resolution to the ongoing disruption, which meant booking rail travel had become a bit of a gamble. We hope that the dispute is now settled quickly, allowing the railway to start to rebuild trust. The timing of today’s welcome news means that, although strikes are called off, it may be too late to restore a full service level. So we urge anyone planning to travel over the next week to check before you go.

“Transport Focus spoke to thousands of people throughout this period of disruption, building up a useful picture of how well communications had worked and what the real-life impact had been. We used it to push for improvements to information and refund arrangements. Now we will work with industry to ensure lessons are learned for any future disruption.”
