Road User Voice – June 2016 – Big data, smarter travel

14 June 2016

How could your phone help improve your journey?

Transport Focus is exploring how traffic data sourced from mobile phones could be used to improve journeys.

The Smarter Travel Forum, set up by the Campaign for Better Transport, invited us to help consider how the experience of road users could be transformed by using aggregated, anonymised data on traffic movements sourced from mobile phones.

The latest session of the forum focused on innovation and technology development in roads, in particular the opportunities around England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads. Jo White, the innovation lead at Highways England, explained how getting better use of data is an important part of its newly launched Innovation Strategy to help road users.

Transport Focus will be encouraging joint working by Highways England and mobile phone companies to pull together an accurate, up-to-the-minute picture of how traffic is flowing on motorways and major ‘A’ roads. The key point is to make information easily accessible to road users, so they can make better decisions about when, where and how to travel.
