Transport Focus comment on variable speed camera issue on ‘A’ roads and motorways

17 December 2025

An issue with variable speed cameras in England has led to some drivers being incorrectly fined for speeding.

Louise Collins, Director at the independent watchdog Transport Focus said:

We are sorry to hear that some drivers have been incorrectly issued with speeding fines or penalty notices because of a technical issue on ‘A’ roads and motorways. When things go wrong what matters is that public services admit it, apologise, and put things right and we’re pleased to see this is happening.

The affected people must now be contacted as quickly to offer a remedy. Where redress is required, this should be simple to claim and fair, and should pay particular attention to any cases where there have been more serious consequences.

It is important that all road users have confidence in the signage, information and safety measures which are in place on motorways and we will continue to work with National Highways to make sure the right lessons are learnt from this.
