Transport Focus welcomes the Government’s plan to improve accessibility on transport

24 August 2017

Commenting on the Department for Transport’s Accessibility Action Plan Consultation, Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus, said:

“We welcome the Government’s renewed focus on improving accessibility for those with disabilities who often face a variety of challenges with our transport system.  Our own research on rail and bus shows passengers can feel less safe and secure and one and a half times more concerned about other passengers’ behaviour.  We are about to research the particular barriers that motorists with disabilities face when driving along the Strategic Road Network.  We can then to identify any action needed for that part of the transport system.

“It is good to see suggested improvements to the railway’s Passenger Assist system which provides help for passengers on their journey. Our own research on this scheme showed that while passengers found it easy to book help, too often the service itself was not provided as requested, or at all, and information was poor.”

The draft plan is available here and the deadline for responses is 15 November.
