Transport User Voice April 2024 – Northern Transport Summit

Working together to connect the North

The Northern Transport Summit took place at Manchester International Airport on 21 March. Transport Focus has been a supporter of the summit for the past few years.

It is all about building consensus and collaboration amongst the North’s political leaders, businesses and passengers on the need to better connect the North.

This year the big question set for senior transport stakeholders and politicians across the North was ‘what does the North need to boost connectivity, growth and build prosperity for all?’

Transport Focus Director, David Sidebottom, helped open the summit with an address on ‘The state of the north – what do passengers want’. Referring to our key work on rail and bus user priorities, he emphasised the importance of more frequent and reliable services and delivering better value for money for passengers.

Later in the summit, David also chaired a mini-summit – ‘Delivering a world class bus network for the North’. The session, featuring senior representatives from northern transport authorities, bus operators and policy makers agreed that funding and plans need to place the bus user at the heart of decision making to deliver what matters most to passengers. Evidence from our recently published Your Bus Journey survey was a key discussion point and a base to influence change.
