Transport User Voice – December 2021 – Flexi season tickets

29 November 2021

What do rail commuters think?

“Saves the bother of buying a ticket every day. Gives me flexibility. And it looks like it might save me about £1000! It will vary a lot by how many days I end up going into the office.”

“Not as much saving per trip as the annual season ticket used to offer and I don’t know how often I’ll be travelling.”

We all know that Covid-19 has changed the way we work, potentially forever. But are we able to get flexible tickets that reflect this?

A new flexi season ticket was introduced in June 2021. To find out if it met passengers’ needs we asked rail commuters on our Transport User Panel what they thought. We spoke to those whose work does not require them to physically attend their workplace all the time.

We wanted to gain an early understanding of how this ticket is being received by commuters and if it is attractive to those planning to commute less frequently. We also tested a number of potential improvements to the ticket to see what might make it more suitable for the way they expect to travel in future.

In September 2021 we published Future rail commuting survey looking at how often people think they’ll commute in future. This confirmed that commuters with the ability to work from home still expect to travel to work much less frequently than they did before the Covid-19 pandemic.

We know commuters want tickets that reflect their changing needs. It’s important passengers are given more choice to get the best value for money.
