Transport User Voice December 2025 – Data driven improvements for bus journeys

12 December 2025

More than four billion passenger journeys were made by bus across Great Britain last year. Buses make a difference to people’s lives, connecting us to work and education, to families and friends, to hospital appointments and leisure activities.

Our annual survey, Your Bus Journey, provides independent insight on those journeys and generates huge amounts of data in the process. But how can local authorities, transport partnerships and operators use this data to make better bus journeys?

Transport Focus recently held our third in a series of Your Bus Journey webinars to explore the types of data that the survey produces.

We were joined by attendees from across the sector to help them make the most of our data and explore how it can be used to inform planning and development.

We also looked at various ways to access information for local areas and the national figures for England, Scotland and Wales – with a live demonstration on our data hub and the Your Bus Journey dashboard led by Insight and Evidence Executive, Jags Lota.

The aim of the session was to help attendees use the data more effectively. Jags took attendees through the Transport Focus data hub and while looking at Your Bus Journey data, he explored the hub search functionality, advanced analysis tab and viewed the survey scores using a wide range of filters and comparisons.

Learning how to use this data is so important as it will aid the delivery of improvements for passengers such as better value fare deals, journey time improvements, bus driver training, better information, and new buses. It also enables transport authorities, bus operators and partnerships to monitor targets set in Bus Service Improvement Plans and respond to changes.
