Transport User Voice – January 2021 – All lane running report
17 December 2020
Our recommendations to Highways England
Transport Focus recently published new research about all lane running smart motorways. That is, those upgraded with additional technology to vary speed limits, provide extra information for drivers, and has a permanent running lane in place of a hard shoulder.
Our research involved drivers in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Sheffield, including lorry drivers and vulnerable road users.
This research reveals that most drivers feel safe using all-lane running sections of a motorway, but they have concerns about what would happen if they broke down.
As a result, the report makes six recommendations to Highways England, including increasing compliance with ‘red X’ and improving communication with drivers.
