Transport User Voice – June 2021 – Transport Focus Board meeting

27 May 2021

The route ahead for bus

Last week Transport Focus held its latest Board meeting in public, focusing on the new National Bus Strategy for England. We looked at how the new strategy can deliver more frequent, reliable and better value bus services for passengers as the country emerges from Covid-19.

We were delighted to welcome buses minister Baroness Vere, who delivered the keynote speech. Linda McCord, Transport Focus’s senior stakeholder manager, provided an overview of our bus advocacy and work with operators and local authorities. Robert Pain, senior insight advisor, painted a compelling picture of the evidence base for our work.

We also heard from Katy Taylor, chief strategy and customer officer at the Go-Ahead Group, and Pete Bond, director of integrated transport service at Transport for West Midlands, on the operator and local authority perspective on the bus strategy respectively.

More than 470 members of the public tuned in through Twitter to watch the meeting. You can watch it back here. A range of corporate business was also dealt with, including formal approval of the updated Collaboration Agreement with London TravelWatch.

Jeff Halliwell, chair, commented on the importance of bringing policymakers, local authorities, operators and users together in public where good practice can be shared and ongoing challenges facing the industry can be explored.
