Transport User Voice May 2025 – EV charging challenges
02 May 2025
Users have their say
Two in three electric vehicle users were satisfied with the overall charging experience on their journey in our latest report.
Our new report EV charging challenges: drivers’ experiences on motorways and major ‘A’ roads brings together our existing user research presenting clear evidence of a need for improvement for road users. Several key challenges were identified by users, including: reliability and availability of charge points, the speed of power of charge delivered, the overall ease of use, the environment at the charge point site and value for money.
We also recognise that some of the challenges identified affect certain user groups more than others including: those users new to driving an EV, those drivers on longer journeys and female and disabled motorists.
Transport Focus is committed to working in collaboration with key partners across industry, advocacy groups and government. In this way, we can help drive much needed improvements in satisfaction and shape a charging infrastructure that all electric vehicle users can feel confident to use.
The next stages of our EV charging work will focus on two key areas. The first is accessibility and the specific needs of disabled users. As the adoption of EVs continues this is critically important to ensure a more inclusive and accessible experience for all. A dedicated accessibility report is set to be published later in summer.
Secondly, we are carrying out further research looking at ways to make EV charging a more seamless experience for users which is due to be published this autumn.
