Transport User Voice November 2024 – Best and worst motorways and major ‘A’ roads rated

Strategic Road User Survey results

Drivers have rated the M42 as the worst motorway in England in Transport Focus’s new Strategic Road User Survey.

The M42’s place at the bottom of the results comes after it scored 56 per cent for overall satisfaction from road users. This follows a significant period of roadworks around Birmingham airport. One of those dissatisfied said “Roadworks, potholes and delays. Terrible road to drive on.”

As part of our commitment to improving transport in a way that matters to most users, the annual survey measures the consumer experience of journeys on England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads, managed by National Highways on behalf of the government.

Individually, the A19 in the north east of England scored the highest overall satisfaction in the country at 85 per cent, while the A12 in the East of England was ranked as the worst in the country at just 55 per cent.

The results from the survey have revealed a two per cent decrease in overall satisfaction, from 73 per cent to 71 per cent, compared with the year prior. Aspects of the journey such as satisfaction with road surface quality and journey time have also declined from last year, both measuring at 68 per cent having fallen from 73 per cent and 71 per cent respectively.

This insight is used to improve the customer experience for all road users, and as part of our renewed focus on improving satisfaction we are putting fresh emphasis on the performance of the individual National Highways regions. This year’s results sees the South West rank as the best region in the country in terms of overall satisfaction, with roads in the south east of England rated worst.

Individually, the A19 in the north east of England scored the highest overall satisfaction in the country at 85 per cent, while the A12 in the East of England was ranked as the worst in the country at just 55 per cent.

We are determined to have more impact for users, so we are work more closely with National Highways while the SRUS will continue to ask road users about their journeys – their verdict is the ultimate test of the success of this work.
