Spotlighting the issues that matter to the logistics industry
In December, Transport Focus will publish the latest results from the second year of its Lorry Driver Facilities Survey, highlighting the critical role that investment in rest stop facilities plays in improving safety and security for drivers.
A key finding from this year’s survey shows a strong connection between drivers’ ability to rest and how secure they feel. Being well rested is essential for driver wellbeing but, given the safety critical nature of the role, it is also important for road safety more widely.
Freight crime remains a major issue which the industry remains committed to tackling, and drivers won’t truly feel safe until more is done to protect both them and their vehicles.
Work is underway to achieve this. Department for Transport, National Highways and services operators recently made significant investment in lorry driver facilities with improvements to security prioritised alongside parking capacity and driver welfare.
Driving a HGV is a safety critical job. It’s vital that drivers are not stressed or fatigued while on the road.
Louise Collins, Director at Transport Focus said:
“Lorry drivers play a vital role delivering goods we all rely on right across the country. They need access to high quality facilities to rest – for their own wellbeing but also because of the safety critical nature of that role.
It is important that the industry maintains focus and continues working together to introduce improvements which will help change driver perceptions.”
As part of our ongoing work to bring together the industry, we will continue to work with partners to monitor progress, share best practice and help operators and decision makers focus efforts in the right areas.
