Transport User Voice – February 2018 – Transport Focus helps students get half price bus fares

31 January 2018

How can more young people be encouraged to travel by bus?

The Bus 18 alliance in Yorkshire has agreed that pupils boarding the bus in school uniform will be entitled to half price fares. This now means it won’t be necessary to show a pass. These pragmatic steps make it easier for young people to catch the bus.

We have been working with the Bus 18 alliance in Yorkshire, to help keep the focus of services on users’ top priorities. Transport Focus is helping local authorities and operators, and focusing on what can be done practically and quickly to boost passenger satisfaction. Over £23 million has already been invested in new buses.

Next on the list for the alliance is simplifying fares and improving that perennial potentially tricky relationship with the bus driver. Both are key findings from our forthcoming research on younger bus passengers.

It is important to remember that huge improvements for transport users don’t always come from the big bang projects. Lots of smaller improvements can make a difference.
