Transport User Voice – June 2018 – Understanding the needs of disabled motorists

23 May 2018

How do disabled motorists find travelling on motorways and major ‘A’ roads?

Disabled motorists form approximately five per cent of the driving population and Transport Focus is currently researching their experiences. We want to understand their needs and experiences, leading to greater focus on meeting these road users’ requirements.

We spoke to people with both physical disabilities and cognitive impairments. We asked 50 disabled motorists and passengers using private cars to tell us about their experiences of motorways and major ‘A’ roads. We also asked them to tell us about both the emotional and practical elements to their journey and invited them to propose solutions to overcome some of the barriers they encounter.

We also interviewed people from different industries who supply services to users of Highways England’s roads, such as breakdown recovery and motorway services operators.

If you want to hear more about this research then we will be at the Motability Big Event at the NEC in Birmingham on 6 to 7 July.
