Transport Focus plays pivotal role in shaping future roads in England

Highways England, the body responsible for managing the Strategic Road Network (SRN) – 4300 miles of motorways and the most significant ‘A’ roads – has set out its proposals for the government’s ‘Road Investment Strategy’ for 2020-2025 in its SRN ‘initial report’.

To help make sure the investment is targeted at what users really want, we talked directly to car and HGV drivers, motorcyclists, and even cyclists, horse-riders and pedestrians. We set out their ambitions in our report Road users’ priorities for the Road Investment Strategy 2020-25 and are pleased that Highways England have drawn heavily on our work.

The report focusses on delivering and improving the basic requirements of the SRN, such as day-to-day maintenance, renewals of the carriageway and bridges, and improving the road surface condition. Whilst broadly supportive of the proposals, there are of course areas for improvement, including:

  • how Highways England can work with others to encourage ‘better behaved drivers’
  • how the company will seek to understand and embrace the needs of its customers in the freight logistics and coach/bus industries
  • how the company will relentlessly seek to drive down the causes of delay, whether within its direct control or not.

The government will now consider all the responses to its consultation on the SRN initial report, before developing the Road Investment Strategy. Click here to read the report in full.
