Road user watchdog seeks action on smart motorways

27 January 2020

In November 2019 and January 2020 Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport setting out three ‘asks’ about the safety of all-lane running smart motorways. He said that Highways England should:

  • keep communicating what road users should do if they break down
  • keep communicating why obeying the red ‘X’ matters
  • set an early date to install automatic stopped vehicle detection on every all-lane running section.

Transport Focus will shortly carry out new research to further understand road users’ views about all-lane running smart motorways, building on its previous work – Getting to the heart of smart and Upgrading the M4 to
a smart motorway.
