Flexible travel plans

Coming back from France recently I finished my meeting earlier than anticipated and I was booked on a later train with a non-refundable ticket. Tried at Lille to ask if I could change my ticket or buy a new one. Eurostar staff pointed me to SNCF booking counter. After a 20 minute wait I was told that they don’t deal with Eurostar, so I would have to ring the number on the ticket. On a mobile from abroad that number would have been pricey, so I sat in cafe and waited for my train instead. If the price had been okay I would have bought a new ticket. So Eurostar lost some easy money. Why no ticket selling facilities in Lille which is one of their main hubs? Not very passenger focused.
