Peterborough road gridlock

26 June 2017

A key slip road onto the A1(M) at Peterborough – part of the Strategic Road Network – has been closed for welcome improvement works. However, there seems to have been a hiccup in communication and the closures are much more extensive than was expected. Was the dialogue between Highways England, the councils and Stagecoach good enough?

You can read what the local paper said here and it was also raised in Parliament.

We have offered to lead a review for Highways England of the communications between them and the two councils, the bus company, the media and individual road users. It seems likely that there will be generic learning points as well as issues specific to this situation. This is something we have done previously with train companies and Network Rail in the aftermath of major disruption and which has been well received, largely because of our focus on practical things that should be done differently to improve things for users.
