Today the RPI figure for July was revealed as 3.8 per cent. This has traditionally been used to set rail fare increases from January.
Anthony Smith, chief executive of the independent watchdog Transport Focus, said:
“Today’s RPI figure would usually be linked to the annual fare increase. After an extraordinary year, it’s good to hear the Government is considering a range of options. It’s important to consider what would help get even more people back to travelling by train.”
