Driving positive change on the things that matter most to road users

Every year we speak to over 100,000 road users on England’s motorways and major ‘A’ Roads to understand what is most important to them, influence decision-makers and improve satisfaction.

Our insight, including the Strategic Road User Survey, provides National Highways and the roads industry with a detailed picture of user opinion to help it make improvements where needed.

Road users tell us their us their top priorities are improved journey times and satisfaction with the quality of the road surface. Our research shows users support prioritising getting the basics right and properly maintaining National Highways’ existing roads over building new ones. We are working to help National Highways to implement the most customer focussed ways to do this.

While road users are largely satisfied with places to stop on their journeys, there is an ongoing issue with poor quality and quantity of rest stop facilities for lorry drivers and HGV’s which we are working with the industry to address.

As the UK’s EV network continues to grow, confidence in the availability and reliability of charging facilities remains a priority with specific challenges around accessibility for disabled EV drivers, where it currently feels as though users are being left behind.
