Rail strikes: watchdog response to RMT deal and upcoming ASLEF strikes

30 November 2023

Commenting on the announcement of a deal with the RMT union and forthcoming ASLEF rail strikes, Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith , said:

“It is good news for passengers that RMT members and the rail industry have reached an agreement. In the long-term we hope that this will give passengers, who have had enough of the ongoing industrial action, some much needed certainty when travelling by train.

“Passengers will however be frustrated that their plans are being disrupted once again by ASLEF strike action next week. In our latest survey half of passengers thought affected train companies would provide a reduced service on all routes on strike days, when that is not the case. It seems with strikes impacting different train companies throughout next week this message hasn’t yet landed with all passengers.

“It’s crucial that information is clear for passengers and plenty of staff are on hand to help. We’ll be sharing feedback on the passenger experience with the rail industry to make sure that essential information is clear and timely.”
