Safety is key, say cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians in the West Midlands, Berkshire and Hampshire
12 September 2019
Safety is a major part of how satisfied cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians feel when they are using or crossing motorways and major ‘A’ roads.
The independent watchdog, Transport Focus, talked to over 1200 of these road users to help understand their experience of using strategic roads. They said that improved lighting, lower speed limits and increased maintenance would help them feel safer.
Anthony Smith, chief executive of Transport Focus said:
“All road users should feel safe. This insight into cyclists, pedestrians and equestrians’ experiences will help Highways England and the Government to focus efforts and investment on things that make a real difference.”
Although road users are relatively satisfied overall, they would feel happier if there were:
- more segregated cycle routes
- lower speed limits for drivers on the approach to crossings and junctions
- improved lighting and maintenance for footways and cycleways
- more signage warning drivers of the presence of other road users
- better information for drivers on how to pass equestrians safely.
