Transport User Voice – January – Making bus a better choice for young people

21 December 2018

Young people are the biggest users of bus – but don’t feel services are designed for them.

Earlier this year Transport Focus published its research Using the bus: what young people think. This study explored what the important 14-19 age group needs and wants from bus services today to encourage them to be tomorrow’s bus users.

Transport Focus is running a series of workshops to help share the research findings and collate examples of work being done by the industry to engage with young people. The discussion will help identify challenges and barriers and generate new ideas about how the industry can improve the experience for young people.

Transport Focus will gather feedback and good practice examples to produce a report to share with governments, the bus industry and other stakeholders. This will outline the work the industry is doing, and plans to do, to get more young people engaged with bus.

Bus passenger experience in Liverpool
On Monday 14 January 2019, members of the House of Commons Transport Select Committee are set to visit Liverpool to hear about services in the area. This forms part of the committee’s inquiry into the health of the bus market and follows similar visits by the committee to Leicester and Bristol in late 2018.

Through its ongoing programme of bus passenger research, Transport Focus provided the committee with a summary of the most recently published Bus Passenger Survey results from autumn 2017 to inform its previous visit.

With overall satisfaction with the bus journey at 92 per cent, the Liverpool city region achieves one of the highest satisfaction ratings covered by the survey amongst bus passengers of any major city in England.

Particularly impressive was the 93 per cent overall satisfaction rating by younger bus passengers aged 19 to 21. This score was significantly higher than the figure of 83 per cent in 2016. A lot of good work across the city has been done to introduce ‘My Ticket’, which provides unlimited travel, on any bus, at any time up to somebody’s nineteenth birthday.
