What do road users want?

11 October 2022

Give us smoother, safer roads with better facilities – and sort out roadworks information too, say road users.

Independent watchdog Transport Focus has published its recommendations ahead of the third Road Investment Strategy (RIS3), which covers the years 2025 to 2030.

Chief executive Anthony Smith said: “Our road network is vital to keeping people and goods moving. As National Highways starts to plan for the years ahead, it’s crucial that it has a good understanding of what is important to those who use its roads. We’ll continue working to promote the user view, and measure satisfaction.”

The recommendations are informed by our expert evidence, including bespoke research with drivers and other road users to understand their priorities for improvement. We also analysed responses to our ongoing Strategic Roads User Survey (SRUS) to understand the factors with greatest influence on whether a road user is satisfied with their journey.

We will continue to work with the Government, National Highways and the Office of Rail and Road, helping them to put road users first as they develop plans for the coming years.
