31 May and 2-3 June rail strikes: pre-strike intentions and information survey

30 May 2023

We spoke to a representative sample people across Britain to find out how the upcoming rail strikes would affect their travel plans between 31 May and 4 June.

The survey details awareness levels, ratings of information provided about which services would run or not run, and ratings of information about ticket refunds/exchanges.

  • Just under 7 in 10 people who intended to travel on 31 May or 2 or 3 June were aware of the strikes on these dates. This awareness is back to a similar level of awareness seen ahead of previous rail strikes this year, after a dip in awareness for strikes on 12 and 13 May.
  • The majority of those that had planned to travel on days affected by strike action say they will no longer do so, but almost one in four still plan to use the train on strike days.
  • Information ratings remain similar to previous survey waves. Around 6 in 10 people who had intended to travel between 31 May and 4 June rated information about which train services were running and 6 in 10 rated information about changing tickets/refunds as good.
