Advance notice of rail engineering works – an update

Transport Focus keeps a close eye on the rail industry’s obligations to ensure timetable changes are made and publicised in enough time. The advance warning helps passengers make sensible plans, stops them buying more expensive tickets than they need and avoids them being surprised by bus replacement services.
Currently the industry is working to a six-week deadline to get timetables right having announced earlier in the year that it temporarily could not meet the statutory 12-week deadline. This followed our investigation in December 2017 which highlighted serious failures to meet the 12-week target.
The document below updates our work to check whether industry is meeting its obligations. It was sent to the Rail Delivery Group, Department for Transport, Office of Rail and Road, individual train companies and third-party retailers.
We found that passengers are still not being warned adequately. In the document we make a number of recommendations for how the industry could improve this.
