Maintenance of signs: watchdog seeks action from National Highways

29 June 2022

Transport Focus wrote to National Highways on 25 August 2021 seeking action to improve the maintenance of signs on England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads.  This follows discussions with the then Highways England over a number of years, culminating in Transport Focus’s Sort My Sign campaign.  Since that date, we have written to National Highways twice (17 February 2022 and 4 September 2023) expressing ongoing concerns on behalf of road users. National Highways wrote to us on 25 January 2024 setting out a number of steps it intends to take to improve things.  We will work with them to ensure that these initiatives deliver the improvements road users want to see.
