95 days to go until Christmas, time to grab a bargain

21 September 2017

Christmas can be a very busy time of year, planning shopping trips, panto outings, or seeing friends and relatives over the festive season. While we are doing all these things, we shouldn’t forget to plan our rail travel too, especially as it needn’t cost you a fortune.

Trying to find the best deal can be complicated and confusing for passengers. In our National Rail Passenger Survey, only 47 per cent of passengers considered their rail ticket value for money.

Most train companies start selling their cheaper Advance fares around 12 weeks ahead. Now is the time to get booking your Christmas train tickets. When the cheaper tickets are gone – they are gone! With our top tips guide, passengers can save money by following some key steps:

1. Get organised early: sign up to ticket alerts on train company websites to get first chance of buying the cheapest tickets 12 weeks or more in advance

2. Look for special offers: always check the website of the train company you are travelling on for any special offers. If in doubt look at National Rail website to find out who runs the service

3. Can you get a discount? Check if you are entitled to get discounts on advance rail fares, including those with senior, young person aged 16-25 and disability Railcards

These are just a couple of the top tips found in the Transport Focus fares guide.
