Christmas travel 2021

Over the weekend of Friday 3 December to Sunday 5 December we surveyed people about their travel plans for Christmas .

Almost half are currently planning to make journeys to visit family or friends over the Christmas/New
Year period. This compares with a third who were making similar plans at around this time last year.
However, at that time a ‘Christmas travel window’ was in place and people were encouraged to
make these journeys only between 23 and 27 December.

The majority of those who are planning to travel to visit family and friends over the Christmas/New
Year period intend to travel by road. Less than one in five say that they are planning to use public
transport to travel.

We will continue to track Christmas travel plans over the coming weeks and whether recent announcements of further restrictions impact this.
