Road users’ priorities for improvement

27 August 2021

In this report, we set out road users’ priorities for improvement when it comes to England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads. These roads make up the strategic road network managed by National Highways (formerly Highways England) on behalf of the Government. We will use this to help the Government put road users’ interests at the heart of its thinking as work starts to develop the third Road Investment Strategy.

Road users’ top priority for improvement to the roads National Highways’ looks after is road surface quality, followed by the safer design and upkeep of roads. They also want to see better management of roadworks, better management of unplanned delays such as accidents or breakdowns, and better information about unplanned disruptions.

We’ve created a simple way to see how the priorities for improvement vary by different types of road user, different vehicles used and different journey lengths by applying filters.  It’s called a ‘simulator’.  You can access it here.
